More than 30 participants from Russia and UK gathered in Sechenov university to discuss health diplomacy and establishment of joint healthcare initiatives. The speakers from Blokhin Cancer Research Center, MGIMO, Kazan federal university, British embassy, Oxford university, GlaxoSmithKline and other institutions exchanged their thoughts on ways of establishing close and mutually beneficial links between the two countries’ researchers and presented their ideas on joint research in priority areas, e.g. antimicrobial resistance, cancer or HIV.

Sergey Konovalov speaking on behalf of the Russian Science Foundation in his opening word reminded of the classical book “The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovichwhich” written by Nikolai Gogol and known in UK under the title “The Squabble”. “This tragi-comedy story of two inseparable greatest of friends and good neighbors all of the sudden ending up as complete enemies as a result of a foolish quarrel, reveals life as something absurd and demonstrates there are absolutely no gains for any conflicting party. The main lesson of this charming little book is the most disputes are not worth the effort of prolonging them, - noted Konovalov, referring to the current political situation in bilateral relations. – As a research funder with global prospective, when it comes to the international collaboration, we always highlight the importance of finding reliable, credible and stable partners abroad. As of today, Russian Science Foundation signed 8 partnerships agreements with funding bodies from Germany, France, India, Japan, Austria, Belgium and Taiwan. Under the most of these joint funding initiatives we can fund the best collaborative projects in health research”.
